Absa South Africa is being dragged to court by one of Africa’s most celebrated politicians.
Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, who was appointed president in 2015, accused Absa Bank (Mauritius) of leaking her personal and bank details, which were published in a Mauritian newspaper.
Gurib-Fakim became a global icon after she was voted as the president of Mauritius becoming one of Africa’s few female presidents.
She is suing Absa for R215 million which could really sink the banking powerhouse should she win the case.
It was also alleged that Gurib-fakim, who is an internationally renowned scientist and prolific writer, was affiliated with the Planet Earth Institute (PEI) NGO during her years as president, used the approximately R500 000 between the approximately R500 000 between September 2016 and March 2017 on shopping sprees.
Court papers state that Absa releases her bank records along with her personal details which clearly invaded her privacy.
She now wants the banking group to compensate for the distress they caused increased her life.
